THE LISTENING ROOM

An invitation to shut out the noise, lose track of time and rediscover curiosity

The Story

The Listening Room began with sound.

Over the last few years, music has become a source of inspiration in ways I hadn't expected. As someone who spends much of their day in front of a screen designing and creating digital worlds, I found myself increasingly drawn to the simple act of listening.

Not as background noise, but as an experience in itself.

It became a way to step away from my desk, slow down, and reconnect with my creativity. Often, some of my best ideas would arrive whilst listening to music, allowing my mind to wander without a particular destination. That made me wonder:

What would a space designed entirely around that feeling look like?

A room where you could shut out the everyday noise and distractions of modern life. A room designed for listening, not just listening to music, but listening to your thoughts, your ideas and the conversations unfolding around you.

The Listening Room was my response.

The Space

I imagined a space where friends gather with a glass of something in hand, records playing in the background, and conversations unfolding naturally. The kind of conversations that begin with one idea and somehow lead somewhere entirely unexpected.

The sort of evenings where nobody checks their phone, where an album finishes and another one is carefully selected. Where the music sounds better because you're truly paying attention to it. Where you suddenly glance at the clock and realise three hours have passed without noticing.

The design reflects that intention. Rich colours, layered textures and immersive details work together to create a sense of warmth, comfort and escapism. A space that encourages people to stay a little longer, listen a little more closely and become absorbed in the moment.

What began as an exploration of music gradually became something broader - a reflection on curiosity and on creating room in our lives for ideas to emerge, conversations to deepen and inspiration to find us again.

The Listening Room is a concept, but the feeling behind it is very real. It's an invitation to slow down, tune in and see where the music takes you. Whilst the room may not exist just yet, the soundtrack does.

The Listening Room hasn’t just been an exploration of curiosity within a virtual space, it has sparked curiosity in me too. As the project evolved, I found myself exploring ways of translating music beyond the room itself. What began as a piece of jazz music inspired an abstract print, which was then reimagined as the wall covering, cushion fabrics, lampshade and even vinyl record sleeves, which you can see in these images.

It wasn’t something I had planned when I started the project, but that’s perhaps the most exciting part. The Listening Room has continued too lead me down unexpected paths, opening possibilities I hadn’t considered before.

I’m curious to see where these ideas might lead, so much so I have ordered samples of the fabric to see how the design translates into the physical world. Whether it becomes part of an interior scheme, an object, or something entirely different remains to be seen. After all that’s the nature of curiosity.

You can follow the journey as it unfolds on Instagram.

P.S. Slight problem. I designed the disco ball lounger and now I desperately want one. Anyone know where I could get this made?!

A special thank you to Simi Čekovská for kindly allowing me to feature her artwork, Care, within The Listening Room.

The moment I came across the piece, I knew it belonged in the space. Whilst inspired by historical artists, Simi's work feels wonderfully contemporary, and I felt the atmosphere and rhythm of Care sat beautifully within the room. If you're not already familiar with Simi's work, I highly recommend taking a look.
